“Ainscough Vanguard operated “State of the Art” hydraulic lifting systems capable of lifting and relocating all types of “super heavy plant” and machinery.”
Due to the location of the locomotive it was not possible to use a conventional mobile crane. Ainscough Vanguard surveyed the problem and it was decided to use one of the companies lifting gantries (Megalift). Temporary track way was laid to allow the loco to be winched out from under its loco shed at Coalbrookdale.
AVL then positioned and erected the 130t lifting gantry over the loco to enable it to be lifted onto one of AVL’S heavy haulage trailers. Locomotive was then transported the 6 miles to its new location at the new Blists Hill visitors centre. Again due to the location at the new site it was not possible to use a mobile crane, so again AVL used the 130t lifting gantry this time fitted with 12m beams and the side shift system which allowed the loco to be lifted from transport and moved across to the rail tracks on which it was to be located. The Andrew Barclay was then winched back under its new shed to its final display area.
